We are proud to announce that Econ Engineering has been named Family Business of the Year at the York Press BUSINESSiQ Awards 2025. This award is a celebration of our heritage, our people, and our commitment to innovation and sustainability.

Founded in 1959 by Bill Lupton, Econ began as a small agricultural machinery firm in Otley before moving to Ripon in 1969. Over the past 55 years, we have grown into the UK’s leading manufacturer of winter and highways maintenance vehicles, with nine out of ten gritters on British roads built by Econ. Today, the business remains family-owned, led by second-generation Managing Director Jonathan Lupton and supported by the third generation, including Thomas Lupton, who is driving innovation in sustainable vehicle technology.

Our success is built on strong family values and a forward-thinking approach. From pioneering the Quick Change Body system to launching the fully electric E-QCB and our latest electric trailer spreader, we continue to lead the way in engineering excellence and environmental responsibility.

Reflecting on the award, Jonathan Lupton said: “This recognition means a great deal to us as a family and as a business. Econ has always been about combining innovation with care, for our customers, our people, and the communities we serve. Winning Family Business of the Year is a tribute to everyone who has helped us get to where we are today, and we’re excited for what the future holds.”

Thank you to the organisers and judges, and congratulations to all the winners and finalists. Here’s to continuing to push boundaries and build a greener, safer future together.
