A North Yorkshire engineering company has been shortlisted for a hat trick of regional awards.

Family owned and run Econ Engineering is nominated in the Family Business and SME categories in the Institute of Directors (IoD) Yorkshire & North East Director of the Year Awards, and in the Yorkshire Post Excellence in Business Awards’ Rural category.

Based in Ripon, the firm is the country’s largest producer of gritters and road mending vehicles and has a hire fleet of more than 850 vehicles.

The business, which last year celebrated its golden anniversary manufactures more than 80 per cent of the winter maintenance and repair vehicles used on Britain’s roads.

It has recently launched two satellite engineering and service hubs – the first in Alloa, Scotland, and the second in the Welsh capital of Cardiff.

Econ Engineering director Jonathan Lupton said: “We are absolutely delighted to be shortlisted for these three prestigious awards. In what has been an extremely challenging year for every business, it’s fantastic to be recognised in this way.

“These nominations are a testament to the entire Econ team, many of whom have been with us for ten years plus, and their skills and efforts to ensure we remain industry leaders.

“And when many businesses have been forced to shed jobs and cut back their operations due to the impact of coronavirus, we have just invested more than £1m in a second satellite service and maintenance hub in Cardiff.”

Both the IoD Yorkshire & North East Director of the Year Awards and The Yorkshire Post Excellence in Business Awards ceremony are being held virtually on November 4.
