Research by Econ revealed that less than one in ten Brits believe gritter drivers to be winter heroes, despite them working long hours in all weathers to keep our country moving.
That’s why after the success of last year’s first ever Grit & Glory Awards, we are back again to shine a light on these hardworking individuals and raise awareness of their essential winter role.
In our second year, the Grit & Glory Awards will once again recognise gritter drivers across four regions: the North and South of England, Wales and Scotland. One regional winner will be selected from each area, and one of them will be crowned Econ’s 2026 Gritter Driver of the Year.
This year, we’re also introducing the Rising Star category, celebrating a promising gritter driver in the early years of their career. The Rising Star winner will receive a one-to-one mentoring session with Gary Lawson, our 2025 Gritter Driver of the Year.

Our judging panel will select the overall Gritter Driver of the Year, who will receive a £500 voucher of their choice, Econ merchandise and a Betty's hamper. The Rising Star winner will receive a £200 voucher, Econ merchandise and a Betty’s hamper.
